Abstract The broken strand fault of overhead transmission lines will cause a local temperature rise. extreme value point decay to the normal area, affecting operation adjacent lines. In order study relationship between distance, number strands, and load current under natural convection, type LGJ-240/30 line is selected as test object. Destructive thermal cycling tests are performed in laboratory. distribution outer surface at area obtained. Based on theory heat transfer, definition axial distance proposed, defined each factor analyzed. results indicate that only negatively related but not strands. This conclusion provides theoretical reference for identification maintenance
